AI Voice Clones & Deepfake Video Scams: Protect Your Family & Team

Cheap real-time voice synthesis and video face-swapping mean your ears and eyes alone can no longer authenticate an urgent phone or video request for money. Out-of-band callback rules stop these scams cold. For technical spectrogram forensics and autonomous agent research, visit our sister lab agenticscam.com.

Verified Case Study: The HK$200 Million Deepfake Video Conference Scam

In May 2024, CNN and The Guardian reported that global engineering firm Arup confirmed it was the victim of a Hong Kong fraud uncovered earlier in 2024 in which a finance worker was tricked into transferring HK$200 million (approximately US$25.6 million) across 15 transactions. After initially doubting a phishing email about a “confidential transaction,” the employee joined a multi-person video call where every other participant on screen (the UK-based CFO and colleagues) was a synthetic deepfake recreation constructed from public video and audio.

Four Warning Signs of a Cloned Voice or Deepfake Call

1. Manufactured Crisis + Secrecy Demand

Caller sounds identical to a child, partner, or executive in crisis ("I was in a car crash" or "confidential acquisition"), demanding immediate secrecy and urgent payment.

2. Refusal of Independent Callback

Caller refuses to hang up and let you call back on their known mobile or office extension, claiming their phone is broken, lost, or confiscated.

3. Synthetic Video & Audio Cadence Cues

On video calls, watch for unnatural lip-sync cadence, blurred jawlines when turning sideways, flat eye reflections, or delayed answers to spontaneous questions.

4. Unfamiliar Payment Rail Redirection

Funds are routed to an unfamiliar third-party beneficiary ("bail courier", "lawyer trust account", gift cards, or cryptocurrency wallet).

Printable Family & Workplace Out-of-Band Verification Card

AI voice clones only need a few seconds of public social-media audio. Agree on an offline challenge question in person, write the real answer on paper (never type secret passwords online), and require a callback on a saved phone number before any urgent transfer.
